The small town of Korba is on the southeast coast of Cap Bon, midway between Hammamet and Kelibia. The town has a population of around 35,000 residents. Records show the town was fortified in 46 BC when it was known as Curubis, so it has a long history. Remains of the Roman aqueduct and theatre can still be seen.
Korba is known as a birdwatchers’ paradise as many birds visit the salt marches and lagoons to the north and east of the town, and between the road and the seashore. In the spring the area attracts flamingoes, avocets and spoonbills to the rich feeding grounds. Ducks shelter there in the winter. During the migration seasons the area sees abundant birdlife resting on their long journey. Young flamingoes make a pretty sight all year round.Non-birders will enjoy walking around the town, visiting the Roman remains and visiting the Sunday market. In August the town hosts a Festival of Young Theatre.
Practicalities
Getting to Korba is very easy. There are regular direct bus services from Tunis. If you are driving, take the P1 from Tunis, then the C42/C44 to Korba.
