Religion in Tunisia

Shahada

Islam is the religion of about 99% of the population in Tunisia. It is also the religion of the State according to the Constitution. Such poles of religious learning, as Zeitouna Mosque in Tunis and the city of Kairouan, have for centuries provided enlightened and progressive interpretations of Islam to the world.

The Tunisian state assumes today the role of protector of the Islamic faith in the country. It assumes a similar role for the

small minority of Christians and Jews whose rights of religious belief and practice are guaranteed in Tunisia.

Aside from the hundreds of mosques, for Moslem worshipppers, there are several internationally renowned institutions of

religious learning and scholarship throughout Tunisia. The public education system teaches younger generations the values of tolerance, peace and moderation inherent in Islam. The country’s constitution and laws do not allow the formation of political parties based on religion.

President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali has consistently advocated tolerance and dialogue of civilizations between nations of the world.
