Tourism spending increases
A large growth in tourism to African countries has seen the amount of money being spent increase too.
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has released figures which show international tourism spending averaged at US$2 billion a day in 2005.
Countries like Tunisia saw the biggest increases as spending in Africa rose by 7.8 per cent.
It is good news for the region and people visiting on holiday as more money can be invested into improving facilities and hosting events.
“Visitor spending continues its strong overall growth contributing substantially to global services exports and particularly to the overall trade balances of developing economies,” said UNWTO secretary general Francesco Frangialli. “Africa’s 7.8 per cent increase is a significant success story.”
Tourism has developed notably in Africa over the past few years, with visitor numbers increasing from 28.2 million in 2000, to 36.8 million in 2005.
Tunisia is one country which has seen growth in passenger traffic in the recent years, with the latest statistics showing a three per cent growth in passenger numbers for the first four months of 2006.![]()
