More spas in Tunisia
Tunisia's spas and thermal establishments have been the focus of attention at a seminar designed to come up with an action plan to upgrade and promote them.
The National Office of Hydrotherapy (NOH) organised the meeting with industry professionals and investors as the country looks to make the most of the tourist attraction.
At present four centres are in operation in Nabeul, Zaghouan, Jendouba and Medenine, but the NOH wants to tap in to a further 80 identified natural hot water sources.
The demand for spas and other aqua establishments in Tunisia is huge, with four million tourists having taken to the water in 2005.
In order to cope with the demand, other establishments will be opened and current centres will be upgraded and modernised.
Other plans were discussed during the seminar, including a proposed development in El Kbayat, Gabes, which will include the building of hotels, spas and a large golf course.
There was also discussion of introducing a new thermal establishment in Bazaz, near El Kef.
Natural hot water baths have held a place in Tunisia since the Roman times, when they were used for socialising and relaxation.
Their role has not changed too much since then and the sites remain extremely popular among tourists.
