Tourism and trade positive for Tunisia

The Tunisian tourism industry and overall trade is going from strength to strength, according to a report from the country's central bank.

The bank's executive board announced on Tuesday that foreign trade exports rose by 10.6 per cent. However, imports grew by 13.9 per cent, widening the trade deficit due to delays in olive oil exports.

Meanwhile non-resident entries and "overall bednights" in the tourism industry rose by 1.2 per cent and 0.5 per cent respectfully during the first seven months of 2006. Foreign currency receipts from tourism also rose by 2.9 per cent.

Other industries also saw significant success, according to the report: "Export progress concerned, notably, mechanical and electrical industries (21.8 per cent), mining, phosphate and by-products (17.5 per cent) and energy (22 per cent)."

Work remittances sent by Tunisians living abroad rose by 5.8 per cent, while foreign currency reserves rose to 8,425 MTD. Current foreign currency assets account for 105 days of import trade, the bank said.
