Domestic Football in Tunisia

Organised football started in Tunisia started in 1906 with the founding of the Football Club of Tunis. The name of this club was later changed to Racing Club of Tunis who went on in 1907 to form part of the first championship of Tunis which consisted of three club teams Racing Club, Football Club, and the Sporting Club and two school sides (the Carnot College and the Sadiki College). This competition soon grew and this led to the creation of the Championship being organised. Finally in 1921 the Tunisian league was born and became an affiliate of the French Football Federation as Tunisia was under French rule at this time. In 1956 Tunisia had independence and along with this new ear came a new era in the Tunisian game with the Tunisian Football Federation being created in 1957. This development also saw the old guard of clubs African Club (1920), the Sporting Hope of Tunis (1919), the Sporting Star of the Sahel (1925), the Sporting Club Sfaxien (1928) being joined by several new organisations.

Pre 1998 the FTF organised the teams into.

- A national division of the elite with first 12 then 14 clubs
- Three honour divisions with a Northern, Central and Southern competitions

From 1998 the top level in Tunisia became professional and at the time the two divisions of ten teams became a single league of 12 from the 99/2000 season.
