Tunisian marine life sees major investment
Tunisia’s rich and beautiful marine life has received a boost with a huge financial investment and a recent educational field trip.
Efforts are being made to preserve the environment in and around Tunisia’s coast and the islands which sit to the north of the country.
The Agency for the Protection and the Development of Coastal Areas recently organised a trip to the islands of La Galite, of which La Galite is the biggest, in an effort to bring the issue of preserving the environment to the forefront of people’s minds.
?‚¬1.4 million is to be allocated from the World Environmental Fund to helping the islands remain in their natural state and also help fishermen in the region continue their trade with local restaurants.
The islands are situated 64km from Tabarka and 40km from Sidi Mechreg and are considered to be one of the world’s most unique areas in terms of bio-diversity.
The sea around the archipelago is home to some very rare and endangered species, including the Mediterranean grooper, whales and the black seal.
Ornithologists will also be keen to see the beautiful islands preserved as they are frequented by an extremely diverse bird population.
La Galite is used by birds as a resting point and feeding area as they migrate either north or south.
It is expected that the work to keep the stunning islands in their original state will bring with it a huge boost in eco-tourism to the area.![]()
